What is a good SAT score? What is the average SAT score?

First, it’s important to understand that the SAT is scored on a 1600-point scale, with 800 points possible for each of the two sections (Math and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing). The average SAT score is about 1050, but what is considered a good score depends on several factors, including the college you are applying to and the competitiveness of the applicant pool. In this blog post, we will discuss these factors in depth, provide the good SAT scores for different universities, and advise how to achieve a good SAT score.

The SAT use to be graded on a 2400 scale; however, currently, the SAT is graded on a 1600 scale with awarding 400 points for just putting your name. The maximum score for the Math section (which includes the math calculator section and math no calculator section) is 800 points and the maximum score for the verbal section (which includes the English section and reading section) is 800 points.

What is the average SAT score?

The national average for the SAT is 1050 out of 1600. Therefore, you will hear many applicants have a goal score over over 1000 in order to hit the average score. However, even though hitting the average score is great, it is still far from being deemed a “good” score.

What is a good SAT score?

For selective colleges, a score of 1200 out of 1600 or above is usually considered competitive. For highly selective colleges and Ivy League, a score of 1500 or above is a good target. However, there are more nuances that we need to look into such as which university you are applying to and how competitive the application pool is. Meaning, if you are applying to Harvard (which has a average SAT score of 1530) then 1200 would no longer be considered “good”, but if you are wanting to attend CUNY York College (which has an average SAT score of 960) then that is considered a phenomenal score.

What is a good SAT score for Ivy League schools?

The average SAT score range for Ivy League is 1468-1564. Therefore, I always encourage my students to set a goal score of 1550, so they are on the high end of the average applicants.
